This document is non-renewable and has a maximum validity of six months. Please note that this document may not be accepted in certain foreign countries; therefore, travellers are advised to check entry requirements on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/home\">Viaggiare Sicuri<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contact the Consulate nearest to you to obtain information on how to apply for the new Electronic Identity Card (CIE) through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/\">Italian Diplomatic Network<\/a>. Dedicated appointments are available for citizens who do not possess any other identity documents.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1 June, Italian citizens residing abroad (AIRE) have also been able to apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) at any Italian Municipality, as provided by Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Please remember to bring your Italian Tax Code (Codice Fiscale)!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Starting from 3 August 2026, the paper version of the Italian Identity Card will no longer be valid for international travel, regardless of the expiry date indicated on the back of the document.
