Please be informed that, following the new provisions, the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) issued to citizens aged 70 or over at the time of the application will have unlimited validity, including for purposes of travel abroad.
Therefore, citizens over 70 years of age who are issued a CIE as of 30 July 2026 will not be subject to periodic renewal of the document.
Exceptions to unlimited validity
However, the unlimited validity of the CIE does not apply to certain functions of the electronic document.
- Digital identification via CIE
For the use of the CIE for digital identification and access to online services, a ten-year validity period remains applicable.
Citizens aged 70 or over who wish to continue using the CIE for online services, once ten years have elapsed from issuance, must request a new document, after the cancellation of the previously issued CIE.
- Access to electronic airport gates
Similarly, for access to automated electronic gates at airports, the validity of the electronic component of the CIE remains set at ten years.
After this period, the CIE may still be used for travel abroad, but border crossing will only be possible through visual inspection of the document by the competent authorities.
The new provisions apply exclusively to citizens who, at the time of applying for the CIE, are 70 years of age or older.
