Traditionally, it is part of the consular functions to provide for the protection of inheritance and, in general, the interests of successors of persons of Italian citizenship who died abroad, or whose death (even if they are not Italians) has any interest in an Italian citizen. The consular powers in matters of succession derive basically from art. 46 of Legislative Decree. 71/2011 and essentially concern:

  • information on the opening of successions;
  • the transmission to the competent national authorities of declarations of acceptance or surrender of the estate;
  • the preparation of measures for the safekeeping of assets (at the request of an Italian court).
