How to apply for a mortuary passport for repatriation of corpses or ashes

The Embassy of Italy in Panama provides assistance and advice in case of repatriation of corpses or ashes of Italian citizens who died in Panama.

Please note that the documentation of the death of the compatriot must first be transmitted to the competent Italian municipality. To register a death please consult a death record.

In order to obtain the death passport, the applicant must present himself, without appointment, at the Embassy of Italy in Panama and produce the following documentation:

  • Certificate of the competent Local Health Authority (Ministerio de Salud y Medicina Legal) stating that specific hygienic safety requirements have been observed;
  • Certificate attesting death in the zone free from infectious and endemic diseases;
  • Certificate of authorization to bury the body or authorization to cremate);
  • Itinerary of the flight;
  • cash payment of art. 66h mortuary passport of the consular rights table.

Once the documentation has been received, the Embassy requests the authorization of the Italian Municipality for the burial of the body or ashes and the release of a Mortuary Passport that must travel with the body (or ashes).
