Transit visa for seafarers

What it is used for and who can use it:

is issued to seafarers (understood as seafarers) who need to be embarked or disembarked from ships, flying a foreign flag, at Italian ports or in the Schengen area, upon confirmation of the ship’s presence issued by the competent Italian harbor master’s office.

May also be issued to seafarers embarked on Italian-flagged vessels only in case of disembarkation for end of engagement expected in an Italian port.

The visa can be applied for three months before the date of travel and up to 1 month before the date of travel.

Type of visa: “C” short-stay visa (up to 90 days up)

REQUIREMENTS: Must be submitted following the strict order below:

  1. Schengen visa application form duly completed in all fields and signed.
  2. Two photographs (3,5 cm x 4 cm), white background in color (identical and recent), one of which must be pasted to the form in the corresponding box.
  3. Valid passport (valid for at least 3 months beyond the duration of the visa) with at least two free pages and a plain copy of the passport (only the page of the passport containing the holder’s personal information).
  4. Payment of consular fees in cash (payable on the day of the appointment, see Consular Fees Table)
  5. ID card – for foreigners cédula de extranjería or carne de residencia, valid (in both cases only an enlarged, legible copy).
  6. Formal and substantive request from the shipping company
  7. Copy of employment contract
  8. A copy of the “procurement contract
  9. Copy of seaman’s book and certificates crediting him/her for performing work on board as a “seafarer”
  10. Demonstration of the actual need or convenience of transiting through the Schengen area
  11. Proof of possession of economic means of livelihood, to the extent provided for in the Directive of the Ministry of the Interior 3.2000 (displays)
  12. Availability of accommodation (hotel reservation, declaration of hospitality), if stops are planned during transit
  13. Medical insurance with the following coverage:
    1. Medical care for illness: minimum coverage of 30,000.
    2. Medical care for accidents: minimum coverage of 30,000.
    3. Repatriation: minimum coverage of 30,000 euros.

The insurance company must have a representative/office in Europe. Travel insurance cannot have a deductible. Insurance must be valid for the duration of the visa (original and copy). NOTE: Insurance must be made with agencies within the country of residence or directly in Italy, no reservations and/or purchases made through internet sites will be accepted. Insurance must be in the name of the applicant(s).

  1. Booking a one-way flight with final destination Italy. NOTE: The air reservation must be made directly by the airline or a travel agency in the country of residence or directly in Italy (reservations made online are not accepted). The airline reservation must be in the name of the applicant.

 

Notes:

  • The procedure is strictly personal. The Embassy has not authorized any agency or intermediary to apply for the visa.
  • Failure to submit any of the above documents may result in the rejection of the visa application at the counter. The Embassy of Italy reserves the right to request such additional documentation as it deems necessary through the document called “Rejection Notice,” which may be issued a few days after reviewing the visa application.
  • Since the visa is a concession, even if all the required documents are submitted, it can be granted or In the latter case, a “Denial Order” will be issued.
